Overview

Knowing when a tyre is finished, not just when it is illegal

The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre and around its complete circumference. Below that you risk a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre, and an MOT failure. But 1.6mm is a floor, not a target.

Tread is not the only reason a tyre reaches the end. Age matters: the four-digit DOT code on the sidewall gives the week and year of manufacture, and rubber hardens over time whether or not the car is driven. A ten-year-old tyre with plenty of tread on a low-mileage car parked in Woodcote is a genuine risk.

We replace in axle pairs as a minimum and fit the newer, deeper tread to the rear axle regardless of whether the car is front or rear-wheel drive. That is the correct practice: the rear end letting go in standing water is far harder to recover than understeer at the front.

What's included

What is included when we replace your tyres

The same standard as a workshop, carried out on your drive.

Correct fitment confirmed first

Checked against the door pillar plate, not the tyre already fitted.

Old tyres removed and new fitted

A directional tyre fitted backwards loses most of its wet grip.

Every wheel balanced

Balanced on the van's balancer with clip-on or adhesive weights to suit the rim type.

Pressures set to the plate

Including different front and rear figures, and laden pressures on request.

Torqued to the manufacturer figure

Calibrated torque wrench on every nut, with a reminder to re-check after fifty miles.

Old casings removed and recycled

Taken away under a waste transfer note and processed legally.

Step by step

From quote to fitted, step by step

Planned replacements are usually booked into a morning or afternoon window that suits you.

Tell us the size or the reg

We confirm the factory fitment, then quote all three tiers.

    Choose brand and budget

Real options with honest differences in wet grip, noise and expected mileage, not a single take-it-or-leave-it price.

    We bring them to you

Common Epsom sizes are usually on the van the same day.

    Fitted, balanced, taken away

Four tyres takes about an hour including balancing.

When to call

Signs your tyres need replacing rather than repairing

Some of these are obvious.

Tread at or near the wear bars

The raised bars in the main grooves sit at 1.6mm.

A bulge or egg in the sidewall

Almost always a broken cord from a pothole or kerb strike.

A DOT code more than ten years old

Four digits on the sidewall, week then year.

Wear across one shoulder only

Points at tracking, camber or a worn suspension bush.

Questions

Mobile Tyre Replacement in Epsom: frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what customers ask before booking.

When should I replace my tyres rather than repair them?

Replace for sidewall or shoulder damage, a tyre run flat, tread near 1.6mm, or a casing over ten years old. Otherwise a clean tread puncture under 6mm is repairable.

Do I have to replace all four tyres at once?

No, but you should replace at least in axle pairs so grip is matched side to side.

How old is too old for a tyre?

Read the four-digit DOT code on the sidewall: the first two digits are the week, the last two the year.

What do the numbers on my tyre mean?

Take 205/55 R16 91V.

Can I mix tyre brands on my car?

Across axles, yes. Across the same axle, we strongly advise against it, because different tread patterns and compounds produce different grip and braking on each side.

Will replacing tyres affect my TPMS warning light?

It should not, provided the sensors are handled properly. We fit new seal kits during the change and re-register or relearn the sensors where the vehicle requires it.

Should I get winter or all-season tyres in Surrey?

For most Epsom driving, a good all-season tyre is a sensible compromise, and it makes more sense if you regularly use the hill roads around Epsom Downs, Langley Vale or Ashtead in cold weather.

Do you take the old tyres away?

Yes, every time, and the disposal cost is in the quote. Old casings leave with us under a waste transfer note and go to a licensed processor.
