Overview

Covering the Common, Stamford Green and the Horton estates

Epsom Common is the large area of woodland, scrub and ponds on the western side of the town, a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest with the Stew Ponds and Great Pond at its heart.

It is a distinct place to work in. The lanes bordering the Common are narrow, several are unlit, and the wooded edges mean fallen branches, flint and grit washed onto the carriageway after heavy rain.

The newer estates bring their own pattern. Streets built for modern parking densities are still tight, and ongoing development traffic means screws, nails and site debris on the road. We cover the whole area across KT18 and KT19, arriving typically in fifteen to twenty five minutes, and because so much of it is unlit we carry our own work lighting as standard.

Local causes

Why tyres fail around Epsom Common

Wooded lanes, rough parking and live development traffic.

Debris washed onto Common-side lanes

Heavy rain moves flint, grit and broken branches off the wooded verges and onto the carriageway.

Site debris from the estate developments

The newer builds on the old hospital land generate screws and nails on the surrounding roads.

Kerb strikes on narrow unlit lanes

Several lanes bordering the Common have no lighting and no pavement.

Rough parking at Common car parks

Gravel, ruts and hidden flint at the Stew Ponds and Horton Country Park parking areas.

Nail in the tread, picked up somewhere near the new estate. Repaired it properly on the drive rather than pushing a new tyre on me.

Flat at nine at night on an unlit lane by the Common. He turned up with proper lights and had it done in half an hour.

Booked for the morning, arrived when he said, fitted two and took the old ones. No drama, which is all I wanted.
