Overview

The cheapest tyre problem is the one you find early

Tyres are the single most common MOT failure item that owners could have prevented. The rules are not complicated: 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre and around the complete circumference, no cuts or bulges, correct load and speed rating, and no exposed cords.

The penalties are worth knowing. An illegal tyre carries a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points. Per tyre.

An inspection takes about twenty minutes at your address and gives you a written record: tread depth measured across each tyre, pressures checked and corrected, DOT age codes read, damage noted, and wear patterns interpreted. If everything is fine you get told that, and we have still done our job.

Questions

Tyre Inspection in Epsom: frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what customers ask before booking.

What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?

1.6mm, measured across the central three quarters of the tread width and around the complete circumference.

How do I check my own tread depth?

Use the 20p test: insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves at several points around the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, you are above the legal limit.

How often should tyres be checked?

Pressures and a visual check at least monthly and before any long journey.

Do you check the spare wheel?

Yes, if the car has one, and it is worth doing because a spare that has sat under the boot floor for eight years is often flat, perished or both.

Will an inspection tell me if I need an alignment?

It will tell you whether the wear pattern points at one. Wear concentrated on a single shoulder, or feathered saw-tooth edges across the tread, strongly indicates misalignment.

Is there any obligation to have work done?

None. An inspection is a standalone service.

Can you inspect tyres on a car I am thinking of buying?

Yes, and it is one of the more useful times to do it.

What happens if you find something illegal?

We tell you clearly, show you the measurement, and explain the risk of driving on it.
